Due to the lack of a dedicated recovery partition and the A/B partition scheme, the TWRP installation steps given below are a little different than what you normally use. Here, you need to download the TWRP.img file along with the TWRP.zip file where the img file is a temporary TWRP installation file. Whereas TWRP.zip is a permanent TWRP recovery file. Hence, you need to first install the temporary TWRP.img file using the usual ADB and fastboot commands. And then, use this temporary recovery to flash the permanent TWRP. Pre-Requisites:

Charge your OnePlus 6 to at least 50% to avoid any interruption.

Enable USB Debugging mode from your settings.

Also enable OEM unlocking and Advance reboot mode from Developer options.

Install latest OnePlus mobile USB drivers on PC to recognize your phone when via USB cable.

Also, install the latest ADB and fastboot drivers on PC.

Moreover, unlock the bootloader of the Android phone before installing TWRP recovery.

Backup contacts, apps, accounts, messages, call logs, and notes etc. for safety.

Steps to install TWRP Recovery on OnePlus 6:

Step 1: Download TWRP.img. Step 2: Download twrp-installer-enchilada-3.2.3-1.zip. Step 3: Copy this downloaded TWRP.img file to C:\Program Files\Minimal ADB and Fastboot folder (where you’ve installed the ADB and fastboot). So you’ll see these files in the ADB folder:

Step 4: Then copy twrp-installer-enchilada-3.2.3-1.zip on your OnePlus 6 internal storage. Step 5: Connect your OnePlus 6 to PC using USB cable. Step 6: Go to the location C:\Program Files\Minimal ADB and Fastboot folder, hold the Shift button, and right mouse click on a space. You’ll see a list of options from which select Open command window here or Open PowerShell window here option. This will launch a cmd window on your computer.

Let’s enter the ADB and fastboot commands one after another in the cmd window now. Step 7: Type the following command and press the enter key: adb devices As soon as you hit enter, a message saying ‘List of devices attached’ will show. This will confirm that your OnePlus 6 is successfully connected to PC.

Note: If such a thing doesn’t happen, then again install OnePlus USB drivers as well as ADB drivers from the Pre-requisites section. Step 8: Then, enter the following command and hit enter key: adb reboot bootloader

This will reboot the OnePlus 6 into fastboot mode as shown below.

Note: Ensure that you’ve unlocked the bootloader of Android phones. Step 9: To confirm whether fastboot is functional or not, type the following command: fastboot devices

Some random numbers will confirm that fastboot is functional. Step 10: Let’s start the OnePlus 6 TWRP recovery flashing process. For that, type the following command and press enter: fastboot boot twrp.img As soon as you press enter key, your OnePlus 6 will boot into TWRP recovery. Note: The installation process is not completed yet. This was a temporary TWRP recovery and now you need you to install permanent TWRP recovery. Step 11: In TWRP, swipe in the right direction to allow system modifications.

Note: The changes you make with this temporarily TWRP version will be permanent. Step 12: From the TWRP main menu, tap on the Install option.

This will show you files present on your OnePlus 6 storage. Step 13: Just navigate to the downloaded twrp-installer-enchilada-3.2.3-1.zip file which you’ve copied earlier and select it.

Step 14: On the next screen, swipe right to flash twrp-installer-enchilada-3.2.3-1.zip file.

This will start the actual OnePlus 6 TWRP recovery installation process. So wait and be patient. Within a few minutes, a successful message will appear on the screen.

Step 15: Click on the Reboot system button to restart your phone. Note: You’ll be asked whether to install the official TWRP app at this point. It’s not needed, hence un-tick the two checkboxes and click on the Do Not Install option.
