The first film to bring the Miles Morales version of Spider-Man onto the big screen also surrounds him with a host of alternative takes on the character thanks to some inter-dimensional malarkey, resulting in a playful, witty film that’s unrelentingly inventive – read our review for more on why we loved it. In true comic book movie tradition, that inventiveness extends to the film’s credits too. The film’s out in the UK and US now. If you want to see it (and you really, really should) you can book tickets in the UK from Cineworld, Odeon, or Vue, or in the US it’s simpler to just head to Fandango or Atom Tickets.
Is there a post credits scene?
Without giving any spoilers away: yes. There’s an extra right at the very, very end of the credits, in addition to a few little fun bits and pieces during the credits themselves. And it’s a proper scene that’s very funny, and has a potential sequel tease, so we’d definitely recommend sticking around for it. What is the end credit scene?
So, once again, to cover our arses: there be spoilers from here on out. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse ends with Miles Morales kitted out with his very own Spidey suit and webshooters, at peace with his dad, and ready to begin his crime-fighting career. Meanwhile, the other five Spider-People from the film have all made their way back to their home dimensions (as far as we can tell at least), in theory ending all of the inter-dimensional insanity. Then we hit the credits. First up, you’ll want to pay attention to the animation that runs through the first half of the credits. It’s not exactly a scene, and there aren’t any plot hints (that we saw at least) but it’s packed with Easter eggs, alternate costumes, and some very funny moments. Other than the lovely tribute to the late Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Spider-Man’s original creators, the next thing to look out – well, listen out for – is the inclusion of a song from Spider-Man’s own Christmas album, which is about as weird and hilarious as you’d expect. Once that comes to an end, we get to the real business: the proper post-credit scene. We jump to yet another alternate dimension, to meet yet another Spider-Man: Spider-Man 2099, aka Miguel O’Hara – the first Latino Spider-Man, years before Miles Morales was ever brought to life. We find him in conversation with his holographic aid Lyla, which builds up to the reveal that he’s built a wristband capable of inter-dimensional travel, surely the setup for a sequel (already confirmed to be in production, along with a Spider-Gwen spinoff) allowing Spider-People to hop between dimensions. Except what he actually uses it for is to hop to one very specific Marvel dimension: Earth-67, home of the 1967 Spider-Man cartoon. Which in turn is home to one very particular meme, which the film devotes itself to painstakingly recreating for the next few minutes.
So yeah. Miguel’s Spider-Man 2099 probably is going to appear in a sequel, which probably will mean Miles gets dragged out into a few other dimensions. But it’s equally clear that this scene is more concerned with making you giggle than with serious plot-wrangling.
